How to Read the Chart

Common features on NWS surface-analysis and forecast charts.

High Pressure Often associated with sinking air, lighter winds and generally quieter weather.

Low Pressure Often associated with rising air, clouds, precipitation and stronger weather systems.

Cold Front Leading edge of advancing colder air. Wind shifts and showers or thunderstorms can occur near the boundary.

Warm Front Leading edge of advancing warmer air. Clouds and widespread precipitation may develop ahead of it.

Stationary Front A boundary that is moving slowly or not moving much, sometimes producing prolonged unsettled weather.

Isobars Lines of equal sea-level pressure. Tighter spacing generally indicates a stronger pressure gradient and more wind.

Short-Range Surface Forecasts

WPC produces short-range forecasts from 6 through 60 hours showing the expected evolution of pressure systems, fronts and precipitation.

Chart timing: WPC short-range surface forecasts extend from 6 to 60 hours and are generally issued twice daily. The charts are designed to show the expected evolution of major pressure systems, fronts and precipitation across the continental United States.
